Capitalism: A Love Story examines the impact of corporate dominance on the everyday lives of Americans (and by default, the rest of the world). The film moves from Middle America, to the halls of power in Washington, to the global financial epicenter in Manhattan. With both humor and outrage, the fi β¦lm explores the question: What is the price that America pays for its love of capitalism? Families pay the price with their jobs, their homes and their savings. Moore goes into the homes of ordinary people whose lives have been turned upside down; and he goes looking for explanations in Washington, DC and elsewhere. What he finds are the all-too-familiar symptoms of a love affair gone astray: lies, abuse, betrayal...and 14,000 jobs being lost every day. Capitalism: A Love Story also presents what a more hopeful future could look like. Who are we and why do we behave the way that we do? (Read More)

In a rare and refreshing reversal of roles, filmmakers put the powerful Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA for short) under the microscope for inspection in Academy Award-nominated director Kirby Dick's incisive look at stateside cinema's most notorious non-censoring censors. Compelled by t β¦he staggering amount of power that the MPAA ratings board wields, the filmmaker seeks out the true identities of the anonymous elite who control what films make it to the multiplex. He even goes so far as to hire a private investigator to stake out MPAA headquarters and expose Hollywood's best-kept secret. Along the way, Dick speaks with numerous filmmakers whose careers have been affected by the seemingly random and sexual-content obsessed judgments of the MPAA, including 'John Waters (I)' (qv), 'Mary Harron (I)' (qv), 'Darren Aronofsky' (qv), 'Kevin Smith (I)' (qv), 'Matt Stone (I)' (qv), and 'Atom Egoyan' (qv). This experimental film looks at the world and more specifically the effect man has had on the landscape and the environment. Without narration, the film shows the world in a pristine condition and untouched: blue skies, beautiful landscapes and endless vistas. The man-made world is much less appeali β¦ng. Essentially a montage using a variety of film techniques to provide a visually stunning montage of images. (Read More)

On August 7, 1974, 'Philippe Petit (I)' (qv), a French wire walker, juggler, and street performer days shy of his 25th birthday, spent 45 minutes walking, dancing, kneeling, and lying on a wire he and friends strung between the rooftops of the Twin Towers. Uses contemporary interviews, archival foot β¦age, and recreations to tell the story of his previous walks between towers of Notre Dame and of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, his passions and friendships, and the details of the night before the walk: getting cable into the towers, hiding from guards, and mounting the wire. It ends with observations of the profound changes the walk's success brought to Philippe and those closest to him. (Read More)

'Richard O'Barry' (qv) was the man who captured and trained the dolphins for the television show _"Flipper" (1964)_ (qv). O'Barry's view of cetaceans in captivity changed from that experience when as the last straw he saw that one of the dolphins playing Flipper - her name being Kathy - basically co β¦mmitted suicide in his arms because of the stress of being in captivity. Since that time, he has become one of the leading advocates against cetaceans in captivity and for the preservation of cetaceans in the wild. O'Barry and filmmaker 'Louie Psihoyos (I)' go about trying to expose one of what they see as the most cruel acts against wild dolphins in the world in Taiji, Japan, where dolphins are routinely corralled, either to be sold alive to aquariums and marine parks, or slaughtered for meat. The primary secluded cove where this activity is taking place is heavily guarded. O'Barry and Psihoyos are well known as enemies by the authorities in Taiji, the authorities who will use whatever tactic to expel the two from Japan forever. O'Barry, Psihoyos and their team covertly try to film as a document of conclusive evidence this cruel behavior. They employ among others Hollywood cameramen and deep sea free divers. They also highlight what is considered the dangerous consumption of dolphin meat (due to its high concentration of mercury) which is often sold not as dolphin meat, and the Japanese government's methodical buying off of poorer third world nations for their support of Japan's wβ¦ (Read More)

'FYRE' Review (Netflix Original). by Jak-Luke Sharp. Netflix latest investigative documentary FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened examines the outrageously unbelievable tale of Billy McFarland's FYRE Festival scandal in 2017. A festival that promised golden beaches, clear blue water, yacht β¦s, supermodels and luxury villas of which resulted in tens of thousand attendees left stranded with no water, no power, no beds and no festival to attend and they couldn't even get off the island.. FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened continues the superb trend of Netflix original documentaries that explore their subject in a manner of intoxicatingly intrusive intent. The depth and exploration of the event that unfolds are superbly meticulous. Any audience member having either little frame of reference or even active participant of events for that matter will be left awestruck with the level of prolific depth the documentary entails. The sheer number of participants is somewhat overwhelming with little unique priority or dedication of the individual's cause and in sequences excessively evokes a somewhat unneeded self-confidence as well as slightly tone-deaf moments of entitlement. Of which are edited and intercut with stylish office workers ranging from Yoga instructors and influencers who revel in the absurdity only to transition to the devasting financial impact on the locals who have little to nothing left.. Those who have lost far more than a week in the Bahamas and Insβ¦ (Read More)
